this privacy policy explains how tanmaxx ("we," "us," or "our") handles information when you use the tanmaxx ios app and our website. tanmaxx is an app that turns live uv data into personal tanning plans, with a smart session timer, ai skin scans, and progress tracking.
summary
tanmaxx has no accounts and no user database. we never receive, store, retain, or sell your photos, face data, scan results, or progress. all app data stays on your device until you delete it. when you run a skin scan or chat with the ai coach, your photo or message is sent transiently to a third party ai provider (openai) only to return a result. your approximate location is used only to fetch the live uv forecast. subscriptions are processed by apple.

tanmaxx is a wellness, planning, and entertainment tool, not a medical, dermatology, diagnosis, or treatment service. uv forecasts, session plans, timers, ai skin scores, scan summaries, and coach replies are estimates and general guidance only. sun exposure carries real risks, including sunburn, premature skin aging, skin cancer, heat illness, eye injury, allergic or photosensitive reactions, and other injury.
you are solely responsible for your own sun exposure decisions and should not rely on tanmaxx as your only safety measure. tanmaxx and its operators are not responsible for sunburn, skin cancer, illness, injury, death, or other harm that may result from tanning, uv exposure, outdoor activity, inaccurate third party data, ai output, timer issues, notification failures, or your decision to follow or disregard app guidance. see our terms of use for the full sun safety and limitation of liability terms.
face data and photos
this section describes how tanmaxx handles photos and related face data. you may cite this section verbatim when reviewing our data practices.
what we collect
when you choose to use tanmaxx's skin scan feature, you provide a selfie that you take or select. that photo is the only image data involved in our service.
we do not collect, store, or create facial geometry, faceprints, biometric templates, or any other biometric identifier. tanmaxx does not perform facial recognition, identity matching, or persistent biometric profiling. before a scan runs, an on-device check (apple's vision framework) confirms the photo contains a human face. this check happens entirely on your iphone, produces only a yes or no answer, and nothing from it is stored or transmitted.
how it is collected
when you choose to scan, tanmaxx accesses your camera only to capture the selfie for that scan. access requires your explicit permission through the ios camera prompt. you may decline permission; the rest of the app works, but skin scans will not run without a photo you provide.
how we use it
your photo is used only to:
- generate skin and tan wellness estimates (tan level, tan depth, hydration, evenness, texture, radiance, elasticity, uv resistance, and similar metrics) and a short summary; and
- show your own before and after progress inside the app, on your device.
we do not use your photo for advertising, cross app tracking, identity verification, or any purpose beyond delivering these features to you.
third party ai processing
to return scan results, your photo is shared only with your consent and only for the scan you request with this named provider:
- openai (model: gpt-4o-mini) processes your photo transiently when you run a skin scan to generate your wellness estimates.
the ai coach chat is text only. your messages, together with non identifying context such as your skin type, tan goal, general location name, and today's uv numbers, are processed transiently by openai (model: gpt-4o-mini) to generate coaching replies. photos are never attached to chat messages.
requests are sent directly to openai's api over an encrypted connection. under openai's api terms, content sent through the api is not used to train openai's models and is not retained beyond what is needed to deliver the response.
we do not store, retain, or sell your photos, face data, scores, or results. because tanmaxx runs no user database, we have no retention on our side. on your device, photos and results persist only until you delete them in the app or remove the app from your device.
data we collect and do not collect
what tanmaxx does not collect
- we do not operate a user account system or login.
- we do not maintain a cloud database of your identity, photos, scans, scores, plans, sessions, streaks, or progress.
- we do not collect or store facial geometry, faceprints, or biometric templates.
- we do not receive, store, or process your payment card or billing details. subscriptions are handled entirely by apple.
- we do not sell personal information.
- we do not run third party ad tracking across apps to build advertising profiles.
what may be processed transiently
- a photo you choose to submit for a skin scan, sent to openai as described above.
- messages you send to the ai coach, sent to openai as described above.
- your approximate coordinates, sent to a uv data service (currentuvindex.com) solely to return the live uv forecast for your area. no name, identifier, or photo is attached to these requests.
- subscription entitlement status, managed through apple's storekit and revenuecat (see subscriptions below) using a random anonymous identifier. we never see your apple id credentials or payment information.
location
tanmaxx asks for while-in-use location permission to show the live uv index for where you are. location is optional: you can decline the prompt and type a city or area instead. your coordinates are used only to fetch uv data and to show a short place label (resolved through apple's geocoding service). we do not log, store, or share a history of your movements, and location is never used for advertising.
notifications
if you allow notifications, tanmaxx schedules local alerts on your device, for example flip and stop reminders during a tanning session. these are created and delivered entirely on your iphone. nothing about your notifications is sent to us or to third parties.
on-device storage
we do not maintain a cloud database of your personal app data. data you create in tanmaxx, including your profile, skin scans and their photos, session history, plans, streaks, and progress, is stored locally on your iphone and remains there until you delete it.
deleting individual scans or sessions, using the delete all data control in the app, or uninstalling the app removes that locally stored information from your device. because we operate no user database, uninstalling the app is the complete way to remove your tanmaxx data from our reach.
third party services
tanmaxx relies on the following third parties to deliver its features:

we do not control third party privacy practices. we encourage you to review their policies. we share data with these providers only as described in this policy and only to operate the features you request.
your consent for ai processing
ai processing of your photo happens only when you take a deliberate in-app action, for example starting a skin scan. by proceeding with that feature after the ios permission prompts, you consent to transient sharing of your selected photo with openai solely to return your result, and of your chat messages with openai when you use the coach.
you may withdraw consent at any time by not using those features, revoking camera access in ios settings, or deleting stored data in the app.
children's privacy
tanmaxx is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. because we operate no server side database, we do not receive or store children's data on our systems. if you believe a child under 13 has used the app in a way that concerns you, contact us at support@tanmaxx.app and we will help you understand how to remove locally stored data by deleting it in the app or uninstalling tanmaxx.
subscriptions and payments (apple)
tanmaxx premium is offered as auto-renewable subscriptions (weekly and yearly; the yearly plan includes a 3-day free trial). all purchases, renewals, trials, and refunds are processed by apple through your apple id. we do not collect or store payment card numbers, billing addresses, or other payment information. revenuecat processes your purchase receipt and an anonymous identifier solely to verify your subscription status.
- prices and plan details are shown in the app before you subscribe.
- payment is charged to your apple id at confirmation of purchase.
- subscriptions auto-renew unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current billing period.
- if you start a free trial, billing begins when the trial ends unless you cancel at least 24 hours before renewal.
- manage or cancel subscriptions in ios settings → apple id → subscriptions.
- refund requests are handled by apple, typically through reportaproblem.apple.com.
your rights and how to delete data
because your data is stored on your device and we operate no user database, you control your information directly:
- delete scans and app content remove individual scans, sessions, or journey entries within tanmaxx using the in-app delete controls, or use delete all data to clear everything at once.
- revoke permissions manage camera, location, and notification access in ios settings → tanmaxx.
- remove all app data uninstall tanmaxx from your device.
- manage subscriptions use apple id subscription settings as described above.
depending on where you live, you may have additional privacy rights under applicable law. because we do not maintain a central database of your information, we cannot access or delete data stored only on your device on your behalf. if you would like the anonymous subscription record held by revenuecat deleted, contact us and we will pass the request on.
changes to this policy
we may update this privacy policy from time to time. material changes will be reflected by the "last updated" date above and may also be communicated in the app. continued use of tanmaxx after an update means you accept the revised policy.
