getting started

how do i set up tanmaxx? +
setup takes about a minute: answer a short quiz about your skin and goals, snap a selfie so the ai can read your current tone, and share your location (or type a city) so tanmaxx can pull the live uv forecast. from there the app builds your plan automatically.
why does tanmaxx ask for my location? +
your tanning plan is built on the live uv index for your exact spot. tanmaxx only uses while-in-use location, and only to fetch uv data and show a short place label. if you'd rather not share it, decline the prompt and type a city or area instead, everything still works.
does tanmaxx work for my skin tone? +
yes. tanmaxx supports all six fitzpatrick skin types, from very fair to deep. your safe session lengths, break schedules, and burn warnings are all calibrated to your specific type and current base tan.
can i change my tan goal later? +
yes, open the profile tab and edit your goals at any time: goal shade, weekly session target, and your spf setting. note that your current tan level can't be edited by hand, it's set automatically by your skin scans so progress stays honest.

uv & sessions

what is a kiu? +
kiu is tanmaxx's sun-dose unit. it combines live uv intensity, time, your skin type, and your spf into one number, so a session on a hazy tuesday and a blazing saturday are directly comparable, and your plan always knows when you've had enough.
how are session breaks planned? +
every session gets a break plan built from the current uv, your skin type, and your spf settings. with spf on, breaks are short reapply reminders (with shade breaks mixed in when the sun is strong). without spf, every break is a shade break that gets longer as uv climbs. you see the full plan on the setup screen before you start.
why does the app say "no point tanning now"? +
skin can't tan without uv. when the live uv index is effectively zero (night, dawn, dusk), tanmaxx tells you honestly instead of suggesting a session, and shows you when uv is back to tanning strength, for example "back around 9am tomorrow."
does the timer keep running with my phone locked? +
yes. the session timer counts real elapsed time, so you can lock your phone, drop it in your bag, and soak up the sun. allow notifications so flip, break, and stop alerts reach you even while the screen is off.
what if it's cloudy where i am? +
up to 80% of uv passes through light cloud cover, and tanmaxx's live forecast accounts for it. the app tells you honestly whether today is worth a session and adjusts your plan when it isn't.

skin scans

what do the scan metrics mean? +
each daily scan estimates hydration, skin age, tan depth, evenness, texture, uv resistance, radiance, and elasticity from your selfie. they're wellness estimates to track trends over time, not medical measurements, so treat them as guidance, not diagnosis.
why did my scan say it couldn't see a face? +
before any scan runs, an on-device check confirms the photo clearly shows a human face. if it fails, retake the selfie in good, even lighting with your face centered and unobstructed (no sunglasses, hats pulled low, or heavy shadows), then try again.
why do my scores barely move day to day? +
that's intentional. each scan uses your previous results as a stability anchor so scores reflect how skin actually changes, gradually. real tan and skin improvements show up over days and weeks of consistent sessions, not overnight.
how does the daily skin plan work? +
once you've scanned for the day, the home screen builds a plan to improve your skin based on that scan's results, plus a suggested session sized to the current uv and your profile. if you haven't scanned today, there's no plan, scan first and it appears.
where can i see my progress? +
the progress tab shows your start vs. now photos side by side with tan levels, a photo calendar of every scan and session, and your full journey. tap any day to see its details, and use the trash buttons or the delete all data control to remove anything.

subscriptions

how much does tanmaxx cost? +
tanmaxx is free to download. premium, including the full plan, smart timer, and ai skin scans, is a weekly or yearly subscription, and the yearly plan starts with a 3-day free trial. exact prices are shown in the app before you subscribe. cancel anytime.
how do i cancel or manage my subscription? +
subscriptions are handled by apple through your apple id. go to ios settings → your name → subscriptions → tanmaxx to view, change, or cancel. cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period (or trial) to avoid the next charge.
i subscribed but premium isn't unlocked +
tap restore purchases on the paywall inside the app. make sure you're signed into the same apple id you used to subscribe, and that you have an internet connection. if it still won't unlock, email us at support@tanmaxx.app.
how do i get a refund? +
refunds are handled by apple, not by us. request one at reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your apple id, find your tanmaxx purchase, and follow the steps.
does my subscription transfer to a new iphone? +
yes. sign into the same apple id on your new device, install tanmaxx, and tap restore purchases. note that your scans, sessions, and progress are stored locally on each device, so they don't move automatically with the subscription.

privacy & data

where is my data stored? +
on your iphone. tanmaxx has no accounts and no user database, so your profile, photos, scans, sessions, and progress never leave your device except for the transient ai processing described in our privacy policy.
what happens to my scan photos? +
when you run a scan, your selfie is sent transiently to the ai provider only to return your results, then it isn't retained on our side, we run no user database. the photo stays on your device for your before-and-after progress until you delete it. full details in the privacy policy.
how do i delete my data? +
three ways: delete individual scans, sessions, or journey entries with the trash buttons in the progress tab; use the delete all data control to wipe everything at once; or uninstall the app, which removes all locally stored data completely.
do i need an account? +
no. there's no login, no email signup, and no password. download the app, run through onboarding, and you're in. your subscription is tied to your apple id, not to an account with us.

troubleshooting

uv data won't load +
check that you have an internet connection, then make sure tanmaxx has location access (ios settings → tanmaxx → location → while using the app) or that you've typed a valid city. uv data comes from a live service, so a weak connection can delay it, pull to refresh or reopen the app.
flip and stop alerts aren't showing +
allow notifications in ios settings → tanmaxx → notifications. alerts are scheduled locally on your device, so no connection is needed once a session starts, but ios must be allowed to deliver them. also check that focus or do not disturb isn't silencing the app.
the app can't find my location +
make sure location services are on (ios settings → privacy & security → location services) and tanmaxx is set to "while using the app." if you're indoors or gps is weak, it can take a moment. you can always type a city or area manually instead.
my scan keeps failing +
first check your camera permission (ios settings → tanmaxx → camera). then retake the selfie in good, even lighting with your face filling the frame. scans also need an internet connection to process, so check your signal. if it still fails, email us with your device model and ios version.
something else is broken +
email support@tanmaxx.app with your device model, ios version, and a quick description of what happened (screenshots help a lot). we typically reply within 24 hours.
